Mary Branscombe

freelance technology journalist and editor

After 11 years of commissioning freelance writers, I decided to try the grass on the other side of the fence and I am now a freelance journalist myself, covering technology, home entertainment and science.

Before yearning for the freelance life, I worked as Senior Editor of the AOL UK Technology Channel for five years, where you could find me writing, editing and musing about just about everything to do with computers, mobile phones, home entertainment and science.

Before joining AOL, I was the Features Editor on PC Plus magazine, where I wrote the online section, along with more reviews than I can remember, and joined Huw Collingbourne in the Rants and Raves videos each month. Before that I helped launch PC Answers magazine, which I moved to from the late lamented Mac Publishing. Before that, I was the news editor on (the late lamented) Program Now. And before that we’re into the mists of history and the amateur publications I worked on during my two degrees: Literae Humaniores at St Hilda’s College Oxford (MA, BA 2.1) and Intelligent Knowledge Based Systems at Essex University (MSc Distinction), which means I’m familiar with ancient languages like Latin and Prolog.

One publication I particularly enjoyed producing was an A5 booklet that Evolution (the British National Science Fiction Convention in 1996 that Simon and I were on the committee for) put out at Intersection (the Glasgow Worldcon in 1996). It had a cover by Jim Porter, interior art by SMS inspired by MC Escher's Metamorphosis and articles by Larry Niven & Jerry Pournelle, Neil Gaiman, Michael Moorcock, Jim Burns and Marvin Minsky about our guests of honour Jack Cohen, Bryan Talbot, Colin Greenland and Vernor Vinge.

You can find out more about what I like, what I dislike and what I'm up to from my blog. Or take a look at my photos on flickr to see what I've been doing and where.
